Without a vision, we have no passion. Without a mission, we have no purpose. Without goals, with have no way to get there; we have no direction.
I work with individuals and organizations to develop and operationalize vision, mission, and goal statements that are highly relevant to the client(s). Values exploration and alignment is a key part of this process – for the individual and the organization. For work groups, these statements must make sense to the group and also be in alignment with the greater organization’s vision, mission, and goals. Developing meaningful and actionable vision, mission, and goal statements is exciting, engaging, and empowering work.
A Professional Coach offers clients an external perspective that’s dedicated to the client’s success. At the core of coaching, passion, purpose, and direction help guide the conversations, the exercises, and the experiments that the coach and client plan and execute. Clients can feel vulnerable when the coaching gets close to the core issues, but the trusting and supportive relationship with the coach, and the client’s strengths, buoy the process.
Sometimes the client seeks coaching to improve leadership or management style. Sometimes the client seeks professional coaching to advance the client’s career. Sometimes clients are referred to coaching. Sometimes the client is a work team, which desires to improve their working relationships and productivity.
In addition to consulting, I maintain a private practice as a licensed psychologist (https://drkevingaw.com). While coaching and counseling/psychotherapy require trusting working relationships between the client and the practitioner, they are separate processes and practices; they are not the same. A primary difference between the two is that coaching focuses on the present and the future, while counseling/psychotherapy will include exploring (and resolving) past issues/concerns, and how past issues/concerns might relate to the present issues/concerns. Counseling/psychotherapy is confidential (as protected by the law) while coaching is an agreed upon privacy. In addition, coaches are not allowed to diagnose mental health disorders; licensed mental health practitioners can diagnose. To be sure, there are many other differences. If your team is seeking a dynamic, fun, and engaging extended day-long (or two-day) retreat, I will work with you to develop and execute the curriculum that meets your needs. Many staff/team members dread these gatherings. My approach includes surveying staff well in advance so that their input is utilized. My retreats are interactive, relying on the expertise of all participants; everyone has a voice. I can weave activities that will tap into individual staff passion and purpose, leading to a unified direction. My motto for retreats is: “We don’t Retreat. We Advance!” Using creative approaches to problem-solving and decision-making, using team building activities, and honing in on the insights of the group, I have found engagement to be high across the whole team. This approach helps everyone get onboard with the agenda and the experience.
If you are seeking an intercultural trainer who can bring years of personal and professional experience to the training, I may be your trainer. I have provided multiple day-long (or more) trainings using the Intercultural Development Model approach, which seeks to emphasize individual growth by way of shifting participants towards a more ethnorelative orientation from an ethncentric orientation. To do this I use highly interactive training techniques that typically help individuals encounter their own internal biases and assumptions. If you are interested in this approach, let’s talk!
